Learning about Wood and Wood Products can be lots of fun!
Check out the following Lessons and Activities, and discover the magic
in wood for yourself!
1. HOW A TREE GROWS
Crown, Trunk, and Roots
A brief discussion of three parts that every tree has, and how these
parts grow.
2. WOOD PARTS AND ANATOMY
Taking a Look at Wood
Explore the many features of wood that are visible to the unaided eye
including growth rings, knots, bark, heartwood and sapwood.
Taking a Closer Look at Wood
Discover the importance of the less obvious features in wood, including
phloem, cambium, rays, and xylem. Can't pronounce these words? Don't
worry, by the time you reach the end of this lesson, you'll not only
be able to pronounce them, you'll know why they are so important!
3. WHAT'S THIS?
Tree and Wood Identification
This lesson will explain how to identify several different trees and
their wood just by looking at them. There's a quiz at the end, so pay
attention!
4. WOOD PRODUCTS
How Wood is Processed
When we think about wood, we think about ... well ... wood. But, sometimes,
wood is processed before things are made from it. This lesson explains
how wood is processed to make four of the most common wood products;
Boards, Paper, Plywood, and Particleboard. You even learn how to make
your own paper!
5. DAILY WOOD
Everyday Uses of Wood in Your Home
Similar to our Wood Magic Show Event, "Daily Wood", this lesson
describes the many (and often surprising) ways that we use wood every
day. There's even a scavenger hunt, so you can identify wood and wood
related things in your own home!
6. RENEWABLE NATURAL RESOURCES
Why Wood & Wood Products are a Good
Choice!
What is a "Renewable Natural Resources," anyway? Find out
in this lesson, and discover the many reasons they are so valuable to
us. There is quiz at the end so you can see what you have learned.
7. ROCK STARS
Wood's Strength!
What does it mean for wood to be strong? What makes wood strong? Answers
to these questions, and a fun activity await you in this lesson.
8. TREES ARE GREAT!
Plant a Tree!
This section includes Tree Planting Tips and Amazing Tree and Wood facts.
9. TOMMY TERMITE TREATS
The Good, the Bad, and the (yes) Ugly.
Everything you ever wanted to know about these little insects, and a
bunch of stuff you probably didn't. This lesson includes how to identify
different species of termites, how to examine your home for them, and
what to do if you find them! There is also a section on termite families
(did you know there was a Termite Queen ??) and even a version of our
ever-popular event "Tommy the Termite".
